Notice that Jerrod not only expanded his story by focusing on his mother’s pressures at the time, but also by seeing his relationship with his mother in broader terms. He saw that she loved him as best she could, despite her occasional failings.

Anthony, the teacher who was denied a promotion, also found it easier to forgive his principal by reflecting on the pressure that the administrator was under at the time:

I started to see the principal as scared. He said “no” to my promotion at a time of deep budget cutbacks. There was even a piece in the newspaper at the time saying he was not a strong leader. I began to see that he was afraid for his own job. Maybe his get-tough letter to me was a way to show himself that he was a strong leader. He did this in the wrong way, but I saw a different person—someone who was unsure and made a very bad administrative decision because of it. After all, he is a person, one who is fallible, prone to mistakes, but a person nonetheless.
